On Thursday, November 17, Gopher Athletics hopes to raise enough money to endow a new student-athlete scholarship as part of Give to the Max Day, Minnesota's statewide giving initiative. Starting a new endowed scholarship requires a $50,000 investment, which is the department's fundraising goal for Thursday's effort.

Each year, the athletics department pays more than $10 million in scholarship costs to help hundreds of young men and women achieve their academic and athletic goals. Scholarship support helps student-athletes with the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board. More funding for athletic scholarships allows Gopher Athletics to invest more in Gopher student-athletes, the same group of students that maintain a 3.22 cumulative GPA and won six Big Ten titles last year.

An endowment gift, which is what the collective giving to Gopher Athletics on Thursday will fund, fuels an endowed scholarship. Endowments provide sustainable scholarship support for generations of Gopher student-athletes because the donation amount is invested, rather than spent. Using the donation as principal, the annual return on that investment provides the scholarship funds. Endowments create long-term stability and leave a lasting legacy of support. The goal of Gopher Athletics is to fully endow all student-athlete scholarships.
