Traffic Advisory: Busy Weekend on Campus
11/16/2016 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
Nov. 16, 2016 The University of Minnesota campus will be a particularly busy place this weekend, with multiple events on both Friday and Saturday. Visitors to campus on either or both of these days are advised to plan ahead and arrive early to avoid any potential delays on surface streets or locating parking.
Friday
There are six notable events on campus Friday afternoon and evening, including both college and high school athletic events. At the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center, the Minnesota state high school girls' swimming tournament will be taking place from Noon until approximately 9 p.m. Across University Avenue, at Williams Arena and the Sports Pavilion, Gopher women's basketball (starting at 4 p.m.), volleyball (starting at 7 p.m.) and men's basketball (starting at 8 p.m.) will all be in action. Nearby events at McNamara Alumni Center (Fashion Fest) and Northrup Auditorium (Indian New Year concert) are also expected to attract large crowds.
There will not be any changes to the normal flow of traffic nor parking on campus on Friday. Those coming to campus on Friday night are advised to allow for extra travel time when planning their evening.
Saturday
With football kicking off against Northwestern at 2:30 p.m. and both men's hockey and wrestling in action down the street starting at 8 p.m., Saturday will be another busy day on campus. The close proximity of the start times of these contests and the venues that will host them will create unique traffic and parking conditions for a short time on Saturday evening.
Traffic patterns and parking for those arriving for the football game will remain the same as they have been all season for Saturday home games.
The football game is expected to end at approximately 6 p.m. Normal egress traffic controls for football post-game will be in effect for about one hour after the game ends (until approximately 7 p.m.). Exact times will depend on the end time of the football game. These controls alter traffic flow on several campus surface streets, where traffic levels are heavier than usual as football fans depart from campus.
Most notable to Mariucci Arena traffic, until these controls are lifted, they will limit entry into Lot 33, Lot 37 and the Maroon Lot. Fans arriving to park in these lots prior to the removal of traffic controls will only be able to reach them by traveling north on 15th Ave. SE and then turning right to head east on 5th St. SE. Again, once the traffic controls are lifted, all routes to these lots will be available.
Though it is unlikely, if any of these parking facilities are at physical capacity when a pass-holder arrives that evening, they will be relocated to the 4th St. Ramp or the nearest parking lot with available space for that night.
For those seeking single-day, cash parking for Saturday night for either men's hockey or wrestling, potential options include: Oak St. Ramp, Washington Ave. Ramp, and University Ave. Ramp. Provided there are open spaces in these facilities, they will be available for men's hockey and wrestling traffic beginning at 5 p.m.

Fans may also avoid or minimize the impact of these unique circumstances by utilizing public transportation (bus or light rail), carpooling with other ticketholders, walking or biking to on-campus events.
