For the first time in his career Blake Cashman has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his role in the Gophers victory over Northwestern.

The sophomore linebacker flew all over the field finishing with a team leading 10 tackles including nine solo. He had two sacks for a loss of three yards with a strip sack early in the game to force a turnover. Cashman is not an every-down linebacker, but has burst onto the scene in recent weeks. He has 19 tackles and five sacks in his last three games.

Cashman started the year primarily playing special teams but now is second on the team with six sacks this season. He has 29 tackles including seven for a loss and one forced fumble.

This is the fourth time the Gophers have been recognized by the Big Ten for a weekly award. Emmit Carpenter has been named the Special Teams Player of the Week twice and Rodney Smith was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week once. Cashman is the first Gopher to be named B1G Defensive Player of the Week since Briean Boddy-Calhoun earned the honor on Nov. 24, 2014.
