Gophers in the Pros: Nov. 25

MINNEAPOLIS -- The NWHL and CWHL had two weekends of games this month with five NWHL games and eight CWHL games taking place. The CWHL has two more series this weekend with Brampton playing at Montreal and Boston at Calgary to wrap up the month of November.

In total, seven University of Minnesota alumni are playing in the NWHL and CWHL this season: Megan Bozek, Jordyn Burns, Amanda Kessel; Amanda Leveille, Gigi Marvin, Milica McMillen, and Anne Schleper are competing in the NWHL while Sarah Davis and Kelly Terry are continuing their CWHL careers. The nine Golden Gophers are among 36 WCHA alumni playing in either the NWHL or CWHL this season.

NWHL Update

New York Riveters 3, Buffalo Beauts 2


The New York Riveters topped the Buffalo Beauts by a score on 3-2 on Saturday, Nov. 12 to earn their first win of the season. The first period consisted of three goals, two from the Beauts, and one from the Riveters. After a scoreless middle frame, the Riveters rallied for two goals in the third period, which would earn them the 3-2 win. Megan Bozek registered three shots, while Anne Schleper registered two shots on goal for the Beauts.

Boston Pride 3, Connecticut Whale 0

The Boston Pride continued their undefeated streak when they shutout the Connecticut Whale, 3-0. The Pride struck first in the opening period and secured the win with two goals in the third period. Former Gopher and Boston Pride player Gigi Marvin registered three shots on goal in the victory.

Buffalo Beauts 4, New York Riveters 3 (OT)

The New York Riveters and Buffalo Beauts faced off for a rematch on Sunday, Nov. 13, where the Beauts secured a 4-3 overtime victory. Former Gopher Milica McMillen scored a second-period power-play goal for the Riveters, and Bozek also scored a power-play goal as well as adding an assist in the third period for the Beauts.

Boston Pride 5, Buffalo Beauts 0

Marvin and the Boston Pride remained undefeated after a dominant 5-0 contest against the Buffalo Beauts. Marvin scored a power play goal to give the Pride a 3-0 lead in the middle frame. She also posted an assist on Alex Carpenter's third period goal, which was the fifth and final goal of the game.

New York Riveters 4, Connecticut Whale 0

The New York Riveters secured their second victory of the season after shutting out the Connecticut Whale by a score of 4-0. The Riveters scored early in the game to grab the 1-0 lead, followed by two even strength goals in the second period, and an empty-netter in the third period. McMillen picked up her first assist of the season when she helped set up Rebecca Russo's second period goal.

CWHL Update

Calgary Inferno Sweep Toronto Furies

Former Gophers Sarah Davis and Kelly Terry faced off when the Calgary Inferno took on the Toronto Furies in a series Nov. 12-13. Davis' team came out with the sweep, winning both games in overtime. Saturday's final score was 4-3, while Sunday's final score was 2-1.

Calgary Inferno Split with Brampton Thunder

Davis and the Calgary Inferno suited up for a series against the Brampton Thunder (Nov. 19-20). The teams split the series with the Thunder taking the first game by a score of 5-2, and the Inferno winning the second game by a score of 4-1. In the first game of the series, Davis assisted on Calgary's first goal of the game, but her team was not able to rally for the win. During the second game, the Inferno scored halfway through the first period before the Thunder tied the score at one in the second period. Calgary then scored three unanswered goals to secure the win.
