Gophers Win in Straight Sets over Maryland

The No. 2 University of Minnesota earned a 3-0 win over Maryland, today, in College Park, Md. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 19-4 overall and 11-3 in Big Ten play.
As a team, Minnesota hit .304 to Maryland's .119 and held a 40-37 kill advantage. The Gophers also had 10.5 blocks, while the Terps put up five. Sarah Wilhite led the Gophers with 13 kills and hit .355. Alexis Hart hit .438 and had eight kills in 16 swings, while Hannah Tapp and Paige Tapp each followed with seven. Molly Lohman led the Gophers with six blocks, while Dalianliz Rosado had 10 digs. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a match-high 34 assists.
Minnesota closes out its road portion of the Big Ten schedule next weekend when it faces Illinois and Northwestern, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12-13. Both matches are set for 7 p.m., and will be streamed on BTN Plus.
Set 1: The Gophers opened the match with a 3-0 run and maintained the lead from the get go until the 25-16 set win. Maryland burned its first timeout of the set as the Gophers held a 9-4 lead. After two-straight from the Terps, Minnesota responded and pushed its lead to six after a Wilhite kill, followed by a Wilhite block. Maryland went on a small run to cut the Gopher lead to 13-10, but Minnesota regained a six-point differential off a Lohman/H Tapp block for a 17-11 advantage. Seliger-Swenson put the score at 20-14 on a kill, while she and H Tapp combined for a block at 21-14. Hart added an ace at 23-14 and Minnesota went up 1-0 off a Wilhite kill.
Set 2: The Gophers hit .423 en route to a 25-19 win. Minnesota went on a 3-0 run for an 8-4 lead, capped off on a Wilhite kill. Another Wilhite kill eventually put the Gophers up, 11-5, which forced Maryland to call a timeout. Hart and Lohman combined for back-to-back blocks as the Gophers went up, 16-8, and forced the Terps to use their second timeout. Maryland went on a 3-0 run to cut Minnesota's lead to five (17-12) as the Gophers called a timeout. Minnesota built its lead to 19-13 off a H Tapp kill and 22-16 on a Lohman kill. The Gophers closed out the on two Maryland service errors to put it at set point, while a Wilhite kill put Minnesota up, 2-0.
Set 3: Maryland came out of the intermission and started the third set with a 6-4 lead. As the Terps went up, 9-6, as Minnesota called a timeout. As the Terps built an 11-8 lead, Minnesota went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-11 lead before Maryland called a timeout. In that span, Minnesota had three kills from Hart, two Maryland attack errors and a kill by H Tapp. Minnesota pushed the lead to 19-14 on a Wilhite kill as the Terps used their second timeout. As Maryland cut the Gopher lead to three at 21-18, Minnesota called a timeout. The Terps cut the deficit to one, but Minnesota pushed the lead to 23-20 off a P Tapp and Lohman block.
