Team Gold Wins Annual Intrasquad

The University of Minnesota men's gymnastics program held its annual Maroon vs. Gold Intrasquad meet this evening at the Sports Pavilion. Team Gold edged out Team Maroon for the win after a close final score of 241.800-241.000.
"This intrasquad meet gives us a great look at where we need to improve before the competition season," head coach Mike Burns said. "We didn't perform great, but we had some great performances. After this start, I'm excited to see where the team can grow."
Justin Karstadt (Gold) captured the all-around title with a 78.900 after competing in all six events. Jalon Stephens (Gold) recorded a 75.800.
Yaroslav Pochinka (Gold) earned the floor exercise title with a 14.500. Captains Joel Gagnon (Maroon) and Zach Liebler (Gold) followed with scores of 14.400 and 14.200, respectively.
Vitali Kan (Maroon) won pommel horse with a 13.200. Luke Aldrich (Gold) and Justin Karstadt (Gold) each notched a 12.900 to tie for second place.
Senior Mitchell Soukup (Maroon) earned the still rings title with a 14.600. Pochinka picked up another top-three finish with a 14.300; Stephens followed with a 14.000.
Liebler took home bragging rights on vault with a 14.900. Kan notched a 14.500, and Gagnon earned a 14.200 to round out the top-three performers.
Gagnon and Stephens each notched a 14.000 on parallel bars to share the event title. Karstadt's 13.900 earned him third.
Sophomores Michael Harris (Maroon) and Shaun Herzog (Gold) both claimed a share of the horizontal bar title after earning scores of 13.300. Gagnon captured third with a 12.500.
Gagnon was named the performer of the meet after tallying four top-three finishes.
The Gophers will return to the Sports Pavilion for the annual alumni meet on Jan. 7, before officially kicking off their competition season at the Windy City Invitational on Jan. 14.
