Minnesota senior safety Damarius Travis has accepted an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine Game. The 92nd staging of the game will take place at 2 p.m. on Jan. 21, 2017, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game will be broadcast on the NFL Network. Travis is the second Gopher to accept an invitation to the game, as it was announced earlier this month that senior corner Jalen Myrick would also play.

Travis has started all 12 games this season and is second on the team with 76 tackles. He also has five tackles for loss, has broken up three passes, made two interceptions and recovered one fumble.

The Florida native has played in 52 career games and has notched 183 tackles, which includes nine tackles for loss. Travis also has broken up 12 passes, notched four interceptions and recovered two fumbles and caused one fumble.

Travis is in line to be selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, as is Myrick. Minnesota has a strong recent history in having defensive backs drafted. Eric Murray was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, while Cedric Thompson was selected by the Miami Dolphins in 2015. Brock Vereen was picked by the Chicago Bears in 2014.

The most recent Gophers to play in the East-West Shrine Game were Briean Boddy-Calhoun and De'Vondre Campbell, who played in the 2016 game. Boddy-Calhoun was not selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, but is in his first season with the Cleveland Browns. The cornerback has started five of the 12 games he has played in and has made 33 tackles, recorded one sack and has two interceptions.

Campbell is a rookie for the Atlanta Falcons and has started nine of the 10 games he has played in. The linebacker has made 44 tackles and also has one interception and forced one fumble.
