Gophers Dominate Boards in Win over Titans

The Golden Gophers outrebounded Detroit Mercy 59-29 and scored 38 second-chance points in a 111-91. Minnesota (5-3) had four players score in double figures.

Carlie Wagner had 31 points, Gadiva Hubbard a career-high 26 and Kenisha Bell 21. Hubbard shot 9-for-14 from the floor, including 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Jessie Edwards had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Bell added eight rebounds to her scoring, and Joanna Hedstrom had eight points and nine rebounds.

The Gophers began to pull away after a close first quarter. Their 56 first-half points and their 111 total were both season highs.

Minnesota shot 47.7 percent from the field to keep pace with the Titans' (3-5) 48.0 percent. Each team scored significant points from outside the arc, with the Gophers connecting on a season-high 13 3-pointers and the Titans making 16.

The Gophers drew 20 fouls and shot 16-of-20 from the free throw line while limiting Detroit Mercy to six free throw attempts.

Anja Marinkovic made seven triples and scored 29 points to lead the Titans. Rosanna Reynolds added 20.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter: The Gophers tied their highest-scoring quarter of the season with 31 points. Wagner scored 11 of them, including a pair of 3-pointers. Detroit Mercy stayed with the Gophers on the strength of six 3-pointers to trail by five at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter: Minnesota outscored Detroit 25-12 in the second quarter for a 56-38 halftime lead. Wagner, Bell and Hubbard all had at least 14 points at the break in Minnesota's highest-scoring half of the year.

Third Quarter: Hubbard caught fire for 10 points in the third. After Minnesota led by as much as 26, Detroit Mercy made up some ground and trailed 82-68 going into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter: The Gophers made all eight of their free throw attempts and Wagner scored 13 points to stave off the Titans' comeback attempt.

MORE NOTES
*The Gophers' 111 points were their eighth triple-digit scoring effort in head coach Marlene Stollings' tenure.
*Carlie Wagner moved past Angie Iverson into 15th place on Minnesota's career scoring list. She ended Saturday's game with 1,177 total points.
*Wagner extended her streak of double-digit scoring games to 42.
