Gophers' Win at New Mexico Is Stollings' 100th

Minnesota earned its second road win of the year, 69-65, at New Mexico. Four Gophers scored in double figures in the 100th victory of Marlene Stollings' head coaching career.
Gadiva Hubbard led the Gophers with 18 points, including 16 in the second half. She shot 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Kenisha Bell scored 15 with five assists. Carlie Wagner had her second career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Whitney Tinjum had 10 of Minnesota's 16 bench points.
Minnesota trailed early in the game before building a double-digit lead in the second half. New Mexico made it a close game with a run late in the fourth quarter, but the Gophers held on to move to 6-3 on the season as the Lobos fell to 3-5.
Minnesota had 48 rebounds to New Mexico's 47. In addition to Wagner's 10, Edwards and Tinjum had nine and seven, respectively. Both teams shot under 40 percent, with the Gophers' 38.2 percent ahead of the Lobos' 34.6.
Richelle van der Keijl had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead New Mexico. Charise Beynon was a major figure in the Lobos' late comeback attempt with 10 second-half points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter: New Mexico scored its first 16 points in the paint, including eight by van der Keijl, and led by as much as seven. A pair of steals and assist on consecutive possessions by Allina Starr led to a transition 3-pointer for Hubbard and a layup for Jasmine Brunson late in the quarter. The Gophers trailed 19-14 at the end of the period after a Lobos 3-pointer.
Second Quarter: Minnesota opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run which included four points from Tinjum. Tinjum scored 10 points in the period as part of the Gophers' 16 first-half bench points. New Mexico shot 20 percent in the second while Minnesota shot 42.1 percent. The Gophers outrebounded the Lobos 18-12 in the second, including six rebounds from Wagner and five from Tinjum.
Third Quarter: The Gophers shot 52.6 percent in the third and began to pull away into double-digit leads. Hubbard scored 10 points in the period, including a pair of 3-pointers. Minnesota led 62-50 going into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter: Both teams started slow in the fourth, and the Lobos cut Minnesota's lead back to single digits before Hubbard hit a 3-pointer and made a fastbreak layup to push it to 68-54. New Mexico took advantage of turnovers and went on an 11-0 run late. Minnesota led 68-65 with 25.1 seconds to go. The Lobos went for the steal before starting to foul. After making her first of two free throws, Bell pressured the ball and forced a turnover and the Gophers held on for the victory.
MORE NOTES
*It was the fourth time this season, and second consecutive game, the Gophers had four players score 10 or more points.
*The Gophers have outrebounded six of their opponents this year.
COMING UP NEXT
Minnesota will host Army West Point on Thursday, Dec. 8. The 8 p.m. game will air on BTN. Kehinde Bello will be featured in postgame autographs. The Gophers will then travel to South Carolina for a Dec. 11 game on the SEC Network.
