Senior middle blocker Paige Tapp (Stewartville, Minn.) has been named a First Team Academic All-American, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It marks the second-straight season Tapp has garnered Academic All-America honors after she was named Second Team All-America as a junior.
Tapp becomes fourth individual in school history to receive the award twice. Cassie Busse was a two-time Academic All-American in 2002 and 2003, Sharon Oesterling in 1987 and 1988 and Martie Larsen in 1982 and 1983. Overall, Tapp is the fifth Gopher since 1982 to receive Academic All-America laurels as the University of Minnesota has had nine Academic All-America awards.
As a senior this year, she ranks second on the team in blocks per set (1.08), fourth in kills (231) and third in hitting efficiency (.303). Hitting .320 for her career, Tapp is a two-time AVCA All-American honoree and garnered All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Tapp has also played in over 110 career matches and 374 career sets.
A marketing major in the Carlson School of Management, Tapp holds a cumulative 3.88 grade point average. She is set to graduate this December, completing her coursework in three and a half years. Tapp is also a finalist for the Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award, which goes to the top graduating senior that focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
