Minneapolis, Minn. - Cammy Frei comes to Minnesota from New Tier High School in Winnetka, Ill. The three-time all-state honoree and state scholar plans to earn a degree in engineering while at Minnesota.
This fall, Frei has eight singles match wins and 15 doubles match wins. GopherSports.com caught up with the freshman to see how her fall as been.
GopherSports.com: What made you decide to come to the University of Minnesota?
Cammy Frei: Well I really liked Chuck and Whitney, who was the assistant at the time, and they also have a good engineering program. I just really like the feel of campus and the school spirit. I wanted a big school and really like Dinkytown.
GS: How do you prepare for each tournament/match as a team and individually?
CF: As a team, generally we do a dynamic warm up and then warm up for 45 minutes to an hour. If we are at home, we go back down to the lounge then some people grab food and we come back up. I kind of do the same thing and will listen to music before matches, if I have time depending on when my match is.
GS: Being a freshman, do you ask the upperclassmen for advice on how to succeed as a player as well as academically?
CF: Yes, I actually do. I ask Caroline [Ryba] a lot of questions because she is also in Engineering, so she knows a lot of how classes go and what professors are looking for. Maja [Vujic], Mehvish [Safdar], and Caroline are also good at leading team practices, how the energy and the work should be during practices.
GS: What are your interests outside of tennis?
CF: My interests outside of tennis are hanging out with my friends and taking my dogs to the beach.
GS: How has your first year of college been? Any moments that stick out?
CF: My first year of college has been very busy but I'm enjoying it a lot. I would say the trip we took to Florida stood out the most so far because that was the first trip we took together as a team.
