In its final dual of the 2015-16 season, Minnesota improved to 8-1 at home on the season with a resounding 30-10 victory over No. 14 Iowa State at Williams Arena last Friday as part of the NWCA Division I National Championship Dual Series. The Gophers finished their season with one or fewer home losses for the fifth consecutive year and a winning overall record (10-8) for an 11th straight season.
Decisions from Steve Polakowski and Tommy Thorn at 125 and 141 pounds staked the Gophers to a 6-3 lead through three matches, but a first period fall for Jake Short and a second period pin for Brandon Kingsley blew open the dual, giving the Gophers an 18-3 lead at the halftime intermission. A hard-fought decision for Nick Wanzek at 174, followed by Brett Pfarr putting up his team-high 13th major decision of the year and a tech fall from Michael Kroells, put an exclamation point on a dominant performance for the Gophers.
With the regular season now over, Minnesota will prepare for a trip to Iowa City in two weeks, where the team will compete in the Big Ten Championships on March 5 and 6.
