The University of Minnesota celebrated National Girls & Women in Sports Day, Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016 at TCF Bank Stadium.
The celebration was held with the annual Jean Freeman Girls & Women in Sports Breakfast, at 7:30 a.m., as Gopher coaches, student-athletes and athletic supporters gathered in the Indoor Clubroom.
Emcee Lynette Sjoquist held a question-and-answer session as Gopher coaches Sarah Hopkins (cross country), Jessica Allister (softball), Wendy Davis (rowing), and Marlene Stollings (basketball) participated.
At the tables, attendees were encouraged to fill out greeting cards and send them to individuals who inspire them or write a note of encouragement to supporters of women in athletics. Attendees were also given a tote bag, provided by St. Jude Medical Foundation.
The breakfast coincides with the state's recognition of the day as Minnesotans annually attend the Minnesota Girls & Women in Sports Day Celebration. This year's recognition was held at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul, Minn.
