Johnson Named USATF Minnesota Athlete of the Month

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) ââ'¬" Senior captain Luke Johnson won all three of the shot put competitions he participated in last month including a personal record in the Border Battle and has now been tabbed the USA Track & Field Minnesota Men's Athlete of the Month for January.
A native of Red Wing, Minn., Johnson opened the season with three-straight wins at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. Highlighted among the performances was his shot put victory at the Minnesota vs. Wisconsin Dual on Jan. 22 with the senior helping the Maroon & Gold repeat as Border Battle champions. His winning toss of 18.98 meters (62-03.25 ft.) was a personal record for the thrower and moves Johnson up to fourth all-time on Minnesota's top-performers list. The mark currently ranks 11th in the nation and third in the Big Ten this year.
Johnson also picked up shot put titles at the Jack Johnson Invitational and the Northwest Open, repeating as the individual champion at both meets.
The Gophers return to action this Friday with the Iowa State Classic and the UST Showcase.
