Gophers Fall to Hawkeyes on the Road

IOWA CITY - The University of Minnesota men's gymnastics fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes on the road Saturday evening with a final score of 435.650-433.550.
Freshman Justin Karstadt, senior Paul Montague and sophomore Jalon Stephens all collected event titles for the Maroon and Gold.
With a score of 74.150, the team set a new program record on the Parallel Bars. On High Bar, the team tied the season-high mark of 72.100.
The Hawkeyes claimed five event titles while the Gophers earned marks of 74.100 (Floor), 69.250 (Pommel Horse), 72.000 (Still Rings) and 71.950 (Vault).
The Gophers began the night on the Pommel Horse. Karstadt took home first overall with a score of 15.050. Freshman Ryan Wangler notched the second highest score for the team with a 14.300.
In the second rotation, Floor Exercise, sophomore Alex Wittenberg, Stephens and freshman Shaun Herzog occupied second through fourth place overall with scores of 15.350, 15.200 and 15.150, respectively. Stephens and Herzog's marks are new career highs.
On Vault, Karstadt tied David Spanier of Iowa with scores of 14.650 for second place overall. Sophomore Yaroslav Pochinka finished fourth with a mark of 14.600.
After three rotations, the Gophers trailed the Hawkeyes, 218.450-215.700.
In the fourth rotation, Still Rings, Monatgue earned a 14.900 for a third place finish. Sophomore Shashank Yallamraju finished fifth overall with a 14.550 - a new career high.
The Maroon and Gold moved to the High Bar for the fifth rotation. Stephens earned the highest score of the night on the event with a 15.150. Sophomore Tristan Duran finished third overall with a 14.900. Herzog and Montague finished in a three-way tie for fifth with Rogelio Vazquez of Iowa with marks of 14.200.
In the sixth and final rotation of the night, Parallel Bars, Gophers occupied the top three spots. Montague took home first overall with a 15.100 - a new career high. Karstadt earned a 15.050 for second and Duran tied with Iowa's Jack Boyle for third with marks of 14.900.
In the All-Around, Karstadt notched a new career-high score with a 87.000 and finished second overall.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next weekend, the Gophers will travel to Lincoln, Neb. for a 2:00 p.m. match-up with the Cornhuskers and the Hawkeyes. The Big Ten Championships will take place on April 1-2 in Columbus, Ohio.
