The University of Minnesota baseball team returned from its 10-day spring break trip on Sunday night. The Gophers picked up a pair of wins on the trip at Seattle U and at Utah Valley.

The Maroon and Gold hold an overall record of 9-8 at the conclusion of the seven-game road swing. Minnesota used 27 different players during the trip, including two players who made their season debut.

As a team, the Gophers out-hit their two opponents .311 to .295, including holding a 17-9 edge in doubles. The pitching staff limited the opposition to 69 hits, with the bullpen giving up just 28 knocks.

Designated Hitter Role

The trio of Eddie Estrada, Matt Fiedler and Troy Traxler occupied the designated hitter spot in the lineup over the seven-game trip. Collectively, the three sluggers went 13-for-27 at the plate with eight runs, two doubles, two home runs and six RBI.

Head coach John Anderson chose his designated hitters well as the position recorded at least one hit in all seven contests, including five games with multiple hits.

Estrada and Traxler shared the role in the road stint's final tilt at Utah Valley and combined to go 4-for-4. Traxler took care of most of the damage with a two-run home run in a seven-pitch at-bat to give the Gophers a 2-0 lead.

Strikeout Machines

The pitching staff tallied 52 strikeouts and averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game in the road swing. Dalton Sawyer paced the unit with 16 sit-downs, including a career-best nine in his last start at Utah Valley.

Seven other pitchers recorded strikeouts on the mound for the Maroon and Gold. Matt Fiedler totaled eight, while Brian Glowicki, Tyler Hanson and Jordan contributed six each to the total amount.

Toby Anderson (five) and Ty McDevitt (four) were the other two power arms to pick up multiple strikeouts on the trip, with both players making two appearances.

Tough to Retire

As a team, the Gophers notched 25 hits with two outs in an inning throughout the trip for an average of .287. Austin Athmann and Dan Motl each picked up three hits with two gone to lead the club.

Minnesota also did well with runners in scoring position and two outs as the team accumulated 14 RBI in those situations. Micah Coffey, Riley Smith and Athmann tallied two RBI with two outs to guide the Gophers in that category.
