Gophers Win Pair of Relay Titles

RALEIGH, N.C. - Minnesota won both the 4x800-meter relay and the 4x1500-meter relay crowns as the Raleigh Relays concluded on Saturday. The Gophers also took home a third-place finish in the pole vault in Cami Gilson's 2016 debut.
The Gophers' 4x800m relay team of Paige Peschel, Stacey Swatek, Madeline Strandemo, and Ally McSherry won in 8:47.62, good for first place at the Raleigh Relays and 10th in Minnesota history. The Gophers won their heat and the event by more than seven seconds.
Minnesota also took home the 4x1500m relay title. Taylor Mikkalson, Tess Wasowicz, Jamie Piepenburg, and Strandemo won in 18:18.65, defeating second-place Michigan State (18:35.80) by over 16 seconds.
Gilson made her 2016 outdoor debut with a third-place finish in the pole vault. Gilson cleared 3.90 meters (12-9.50) for a season-best mark, improving on her lone indoor appearance during which she placed third at the Parents Day Invite at 3.67m (12-00.50) while competing unattached.
On day one of the Raleigh Relays Friday, the Gophers earned three individual top-10 finishes. Strandemo ran a career-best 10:21.84 to place third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Mikkalson close behind in eighth. McSherry placed sixth of 85 runners in the 1,500-meter run as well, coming in less than half a second off her personal best in 4:32.56.
The Gophers will compete at two meets next week with members of the team headed to UCLA for the Bruin Legends of Track & Field Invitational Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2 while other Gophers remain at home to compete locally at the Hamline Invitational at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 2.
