Gophers Defeat Iowa 4-3

The No. 62 University of Minnesota Gophers won a close 4-3 match over Iowa this afternoon moving to 11-7 on the season and 3-2 in Big Ten play.
"We talked about how much we wanted to rebound from the Nebraska match and be Minnesota tough," head coach Chuck Merzbacher said. "We battled for the doubles point and we were in every singles match. I am very proud of this group and how they stepped up today. Every win in the Big Ten is a good win."
Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar improved to 9-5 together with the day's first victory, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot.
Iowa took a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot leaving it up to Julia Courter and Caroline Ryba. The duo was not in unfamiliar territory having sealed a number of doubles points for the Gophers this season. They did it again with a 7-5 win improving to 11-2, all in dual match play, together.
Annemarie Emme quickly made it 2-0 in favor of the Maroon and Gold with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 5 spot. She is now 14-15 this season.
Caroline Ryba took a strong victory at No. 1 to put the Gophers one win away from taking the match. She holds a 15-8 record on the season and is 9-4 in dual match play.
Iowa took wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to pull within one before Jessika Mozia solidified the Gophers victory with a 7-6, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot. Mozia is 12-10 this season.
Iowa won at No. 6 to close out the match.
The Gophers host Michigan State and Michigan next weekend. They are 8-1 this season at the Baseline Tennis Center.
