MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Gopher Hockey All-American alum Todd Richards will once again represent the U.S. in international competition after being named an assistant coach for the U.S. Men's National Team on Friday. Team USA will compete in the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship from May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.
A native of Crystal, Minn., Richards will be behind the U.S. bench for the fourth time in his career, most recently serving as head coach of the U.S Men's National Team last year as the team won bronze behind eight wins - the most ever by a U.S. squad at the event. Richards, who has previously served as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minneosta Wild, was also an assistant coach for the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team and the 2010 Men's National Team at the IIHF Men's World Championship.
With the University of Minnesota, Richards served as team captain as a senior and was a Second Team All-American during the 1988-89 season. His 158 career points and 128 career assists are still program records for scoring by a defenseman.
The 2016 IIHF Men's World Championships will include teams from 16 nations, split into two groups of eight. Teams will play a round-robin format within their group and the top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The U.S. will play its seven preliminary round games in St. Petersburg at Yubileiny Arena.
