Gophers Win Nine Events at Holst Invitational

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Golden Gopher women's track & field team won nine event titles while facing competition from 35 teams at the Holst Invitational hosted by Concordia-St. Paul at Sea Foam Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Madeline Strandemo won the 1,500-meter run in a career-best 4:25.06, setting a new Holst Invitatioinal record and pacing the field of 64 runners. She won by over 21 seconds, leading all eight Gophers with career-best times. Unattached Gophers Samantha Prouty (4:46.18), Rachel Wians (4:47.44), and Ally Smith (4:48.34) finished second through fourth behind Strandemo, and Naomi Ollila was sixth (4:53.42).
In the sprints, Bolade Jinadu won both the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash in career-best times. She clocked a time of 24.86 in the 200m and 56.58 in the 400m. Unattached Gopher Sophia Anderson was runner-up in both events, including clocking a career-best 56.66 in the 400m.
Tess Wasowicz won the 800-meter run in a career-best 2:16.23, and fellow Gophers Kate Bishop (2:20.44) and Kelsey Sather (2:23.85) also posted personal bests.
Five Gophers won event titles while competing unattached at the Holst Invitational as well. Megan Flanagan won the 3,000-meter steeple chase in a career-best 11:36.29, while Caitlin Dillon was the top attached Gopher as runner-up in a career-best 11:48.65. Abby Kargol won the 5,000-meter run in 17:50.58 as all seven Gophers finished in the top nine.
Gopher rookies won both hurdle events as Erin Huls won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.00, and Rachel Schow won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.12 after running a career-best 13.92 in prelims. Schow also finished as runner-up in the 400m hurdles (1:01.43).
Shay Nielsen picked up the Gophers' lone title in the field events with a win in the shot put at 13.78m (45-02.50) while competing unattached.
Other highlights for the Gophers included Temi Ogunrinde's career-best mark in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 51.91m (170-04) as runner-up. Allie Heifort finished fourth in both the hammer (49.65m, 162-11) and the shot put (12.63m, 41-05.25) as well.
Three Gophers pole vaulters posted career-best marks while competing unattached, led by Allie Funk clearing 3.65m (11-11.75) as the runner-up. Miranda Severin (3.50m, 11-05.75) and Christina Stathakis (3.20m, 10-06.00) made their outdoor collegiate debuts in fifth and seventh place, followed by Macy Narr (3.20m, 10-06.00) in eighth as well.
Up next for Minnesota is the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23.
