Gophers Open Play at Big Ten Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's golf team began play on Friday at the three-day Big Ten Championships, with freshman Niamh Ward leading the way after 18 holes at The Fort Golf Course.
Ward is tied for 28th after an opening round of one-over-par 73. Junior Emie Peronnin and freshman Maggie Heggerston are one shot behind in a tie for 35th after each carding two-over 74 on Friday.
Freshman Muyu Wu posted a four-over-par 76 to tie for 55th, while sophomore Sabrine Garrison is tied for 61st at 77 (+5) and classmate Heather Ciskowski is among a tie for 68th at six-over-par 78.
As a team, the Gophers posted a score of 297, 12th among the 14-team field.
Purdue holds the round one lead with a team score of 283, with Wisconsin's Brooke Ferrell atop the leaderboard after a seven-under-par 65.
The Big Ten Championships continue with second round action on Saturday, with tee times set to begin at 8:30 a.m. ET.
