Austin Athmann was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league on Monday. The junior paced Minnesota to a 4-0 week on the diamond, including a conference series sweep at Northwestern.
Athmann paced the Gophers on offense all week long. He touted a .500 batting average with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .533 on-base clip. The backstop totaled seven hits and seven RBI en route to his first career honor by the league.
Where Athmann excelled the most at the plate was with runners on base. The Cold Spring, Minn. native hit a scorching .625 with runners on base and .571 with runners in scoring position. Athmann successfully advanced runners in two-thirds of his at-bats and notched two two-out RBI.
The junior extended his on-base streak to a team-best 25 straight games by way of three multi-hit games last week, increasing his season total to 14 games with two-plus hits.
Athmann blasted two home runs in the series finale and tallied four RBI to guide Minnesota to its seventh straight road win and clinched its fourth consecutive Big Ten Conference series to open league play.
In his last seven games, Athmann has recorded 11 RBI as the No. 4 hitter in the lineup. The power-hitting product of Rocori High School has 21 extra-base hits and leads the conference by 90 points with a .730 slugging percentage.
Athmann is the second player to receive Player of the Week honors by the Big Ten this month, as Matt Fiedler received the honor on April 4.
Athmann and the Gophers return to the diamond tomorrow evening when they travel to Fargo, N.D. for a non-conference showdown with North Dakota State.
