LAWRENCE, Kan. - Day one competition at the NCAA West Preliminary has been suspended due to inclement weather. A revised schedule has Friday's competition beginning at 8 a.m. CT with the women's 10,000m run.
With the revised schedule for Friday and Saturday, all running events will be conducted as a quarterfinal. In the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100m hurdles, and 400m hurdles, the heat winner and the next six fastest times advance. In the 1,500m, the top two times in each heat plus the next four fastest times advance. All other running events advance as originally scheduled.
Both the men's and women's pole vault as well as the men's and women's high jump competitions will be contested indoors at KU's Anschutz Sports Pavilion.
Men's hammer throw and women's javelin are the only events that were contested before rain, heavy winds, and lightning delayed competition at KU's Rock Chalk Park on Thursday. Neither event was completed; Gophers junior Nicolle Murphy is in flight three of the hammer and has not thrown yet.
Twenty Golden Gophers qualified for the 2016 NCAA West Prelim, which is scheduled to continue through Saturday. The top 12 individual competitors and top 12 relay teams from both the East and West Prelims qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11.
