If you've been near the corner of 15th and 5th in Dinkytown over the past two months, you have seen plenty of activity behind the Bierman and Gibson-Nagurski buildings. As fundraising for the project continues, construction has begun on the University of Minnesota's new Athletes Village.

The area to the east of the Bierman and Gibson-Nagurski buildings was officially fenced off in mid-February, transforming it into an active construction site. Since that day, crews have been laying the groundwork for the rest of the project, quite literally.

Work to this point has focused on prepping the earth within the site for the construction of three new buildings, tasks that have ranged from soil testing to removal of curbs, storm water infrastructure and more.

In addition to earth prep, crews have begun early work on temporary utilities that will feed power, water, gas and more to the Athletes Village while work on permanent utilities is done later in construction.

Looking ahead to late spring, this critical prep work will continue. As many as 100 trucks will come and go from the site every day as the weather gets warmer and we approach the summer season, during which foundation and footing work for the new buildings will begin.
