As students pack up and leave the University of Minnesota campus for summer vacation, Gopher Athletics' head coaches and administrators will also be hitting the road as they load onto busses for the 2016 Gopher Road Trip. The trip will bring Gopher Athletics to eight communities throughout greater Minnesota over the course of two, two-day excursions in early June.

"As a department, the Gopher Road Trip is one of our favorite events of the year," said interim athletics director Beth Goetz. "We see support for Gopher Athletics throughout the state of Minnesota. That support is so important to all of our programs and our student-athletes. The road trip gives us the chance to get out to different parts of the state and personally thank fans and alumni for everything they do for the Gophers."

The first leg of this year's Gopher Road Trip, dubbed the "Maroon Trip," will leave campus on the morning of June 1 and head west for a midday event in Hutchinson. From there, the bus will head northwest to Perham before venturing into the heart of lakes country, visiting Nisswa for a breakfast event on June 2. On the drive back toward Minneapolis, the group will stop in Spicer for a final event.

A week later, the "Gold Trip" will head down Highway 212 toward the southwest to visit Marshall on June 7, then turn back to the east and head to Kasota to wrap up the day. The final day of the Gopher Road Trip will bring the crew to Owatonna in the morning before a short drive to Rochester for a lunchtime event.

Each leg of this year's trip will feature stops in two communities that have never hosted a Gopher Road Trip event in the past. The four communities appearing on the trip's itinerary for the first time are Perham, Nisswa, Marshall and Kasota.

"For me, the best part of this year's Gopher Road Trip is the opportunity to visit some new places," added Goetz. "It's always fun to meet Gopher fans who may not be able to make it to the Twin Cities as often as they would like to support their favorite teams."

From start to finish, the Gopher Road Trip will log about 1,000 miles on the roads of Minnesota.

The last two years have brought record crowds to Gopher Road Trip events, with more than 4,000 people attending stops on the trip during the past two summers.

Every event on the Gopher Road Trip is open to the public, but space at each venue is limited. Registering in advance to attend events via the Gopher Road Trip website is highly encouraged, as most reach capacity quickly.
