Minnesota took three of five home games last week and collected its 30th win of 2016, the most the program has produced since 2013, with seven regular season contests remaining. The Gophers swept Kansas in a midweek non-conference set and took a result against Indiana over the weekend.
The Maroon and Gold touted 74 hits, including 28 extra-base hits, good for an average of .387 during the week. Minnesota raced across at least eight runs in four of the five tilts and outscored its opponents 49-35.
On the mound, the Gophers totaled 42 strikeouts in 45.0 innings pitched. Lucas Gilbreath led the staff with 13 send-downs in three appearances, while Dalton Sawyer paced the starters with eight.
Start the Trot
Minnesota found a recent power surge at home last week. Siebert Field, proven to favor pitchers in years past, saw 13 home runs off the bat of the home team.
Matt Fiedler and Micah Coffey guided the wrecking crew with three homers apiece. The experience dup of Austin Athmann and Dan Motl chipped in two roundtrippers, while Connor Schaefbauer, Jordan Smith and Matt Stemper blasted one home run each.
The Gophers matched a season-high by drilling four home runs as a team in one contest versus both Indiana and Kansas. The Maroon and GoldÃs previously launched four homers in the series finale against Iowa to complete the series victory and open Big Ten play.
Shut it Down
On the back end of the bullpen, Jordan Jess has shown his resolve and proven to be a clutch performer when his team needs him the most.
Jess made appearances in three games last week and earned one save. The southpaw struck out six batters in 5.0 innings of work in relief. Jess did not allow a single hit or run last week to guide the pitching staff.
The Ripon, Wis. native notched his seventh save of the season in a tightly-contest 8-6 victory against Indiana and moved into a tie for ninth in single-season program history for saves in a season. Jessà career total of 10 saves has him positioned in a tie for fourth on MinnesotaÃs charts all-time in saves.
