MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers welcome six newcomers to the 2016-17 women’s hockey team, including Lindsay Agnew. The left-handed forward out of Oakville, Ontario has established herself as one of the best young hockey players from Canada.

Agnew found success with the Mississauga Jr. Chiefs of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League during high school, totaling 150 points (63g-87a) in 131 career games. During her three seasons with the Jr. Chiefs, she was an OWHA Provincial gold medalist, a PWHL Final 8 silver medalist, a two-time Stoney Creek University Showcase gold medalist, a two-time Union College Fall Fest gold medalist, and a 2 Nations College Prep Series gold medalist.

She has spent time playing for her native Canada, suiting up for Team Ontario Red, Team Ontario Blue, and Canada’s National Women's Under-18 team. With Team Ontario Blue and Team Ontario Red, she earned two silver medals and one gold medal; Agnew also captained Canada’s Under-18 team. She has attended multiple national camps, including the 2014 National Women’s Fall Festival in Calgary, Alberta.

Agnew joins Serena D’Angelo, Kippin Keller, Patti Marshall, Katie Robinson, and Alex Woken to make up next season’s incoming class. Stay tuned as GopherSports.com introduces each of the new Gophers, beginning with Agnew.

Gopher Sports: How did you start playing hockey?
Lindsay Agnew: I was inspired by the 2002 Olympics. I was four years old during those games, so I had to beg my parents for three years to put me in hockey. Finally when I was seven, they let me play. I was a late-bloomer.

GS: What other sports did you play growing up?
LA: I played competitive golf until I was about fourteen. I got my handicap shot down to about a nine. I played in some tournaments here and there, but I ended when I was 13 years old. Then I played competitive lacrosse, too. I stopped playing when I was 13 or 14 years old.

GS: What made you choose the University of Minnesota?
LA: I chose Minnesota because I knew I could experience great hockey and great academics. The coaching staff and the team were huge factors as well.

GS: Do you have a major or career field in mind?
LA: I want to be a teacher, so I will go into education.

GS: Other than hockey, what do you like to do in your free time?
LA: I like to hang out with family and friends.

GS: What are you most looking forward to about playing for the Gophers?
LA: I can’t wait to play with such amazing players every single day. I’m most excited to play with such great players and learn from them and the coaches.

GS: Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
LA: I have a couple. If I have a good game, I have to do the same pre-game routine. If I don’t play well, I switch it up.

GS: Who was your hockey role model growing up?
LA: I always idolized Sidney Crosby. It was cool to see him win the Conn Smythe this year.

GS: What is your favorite part about playing hockey?
LA: I love every aspect of the game. My favorite part of it is the competitive nature. You get to compete every shift. You get to redeem yourself every shift and prove yourself. Those are probably my favorite aspects of the game.

GS: How has it felt to be able to play for your native Canada?
LA: It is always a huge honor. When I first made it, it was a dream come true to represent my country and play for them on home soil.

GS: How did it feel to have so much success with your club team in high school?
LA: I definitely learned a lot playing club hockey. I stuck with the same team for three years, so I learned a lot about myself as a player. It was a great experience for me.

GS: What was your most memorable hockey moment so far?
LA: I think would be winning nationals with Team Ontario Red this year or World Championships. They both were amazing to be a part of.
