ROCHESTER, Minn. - On the heels of completing two of the best individual seasons in Gopher women's golf history, rising juniors Sabrine Garrison and Heather Ciskowski teamed up once more this week for the 37th Minnesota Women's State Amateur Four-Ball Championship. Turning in a nearly flawless performance, the duo captured the title with a score of 15-under-par 129 (67-62) on Wednesday.
"Sabrine and I both played very well and had a fun time," said Ciskowski, who set a new school single-season record this year with a 73.93 scoring average. "It meant a lot to win for the both of us and represent the University of Minnesota."
"Heather and I thought the four ball was a wonderful experience," added Garrison, whose 74.04 scoring average this season also eclipsed the previous record. "This type of competition was new for us but was a wonderful opportunity to show not only the strength of our games but our strength as teammates and most importantly friends."
The duo won the tournament by six strokes, and led the tournament after each round. It began Tuesday at the Somerby Golf Club in Rochester, where they got off to a strong start with three birdies in the first four holes. Hole 7 marked their only bogey of the tournament, as they made the turn at two-under-par 34. Three more birdies followed on the back nine to take the first round lead at five-under 67.
On Wednesday, the red numbers came quickly with birdies on each of the first four holes. Three pars followed before closing out the first nine with a pair of birdies to score six-under-par 30. Birdies on holes 10, 12, 13, and 15 widened the gap between the two Gophers and the field.
"Being able to trust each other and playing strategically knowing each other's strengths and weaknesses was instrumental to our success," Garrison said.
"I think our putting went our way throughout the tournament and we fed off each other well," added Ciskowski. "We support each other on and off the golf course so it was easy for us to team up and compete. Overall I had an incredible time!"
The competition was played under the four-ball format, in which teams of two golfers each play their own ball and the lower score of the hole is recorded on the team's scorecard.
