Palma Kaposi from Pécs, Hungary, has signed a Big Ten Tender of Financial Aid to join the University of Minnesota women's basketball program. She will have three years of eligibility beginning in the 2016-17 season.
"We are honored to welcome Palma Kaposi to the Golden Gopher family," head coach Marlene Stollings said. "She has extensive national team experience and comes from a system very similar to how we play. Palma is versatile and can play both inside and outside at the power forward position. This is an exciting addition to our program."
A 6-foot-1 forward, Kaposi has been a member of the Hungarian National Team since 2012. She played for Team Hungary at the 2012 U16 European Championship, the 2014 U18 European Championship and the 2015 U20 European Championship. Kaposi's free throws late in the game helped seal the Division B title for Hungary at the 2014 U18 Championship.
Kaposi, who has also played for PEAC-Pécs in Hungary-A Division, was a leader on her U20 team that took second place team at the 2015 Hungarian Championship. In 2014, she helped lead her team to first place in the Hungarian Cup, second place in the Hungarian Championship and third place in the Middle European League. Kaposi was the MVP for her high school champion team as a senior in 2014.
"I chose Minnesota because I like the team, the coaches and their style of play so it won't be that big of an adjustment for me," Kaposi said. "Minnesota has been proven to be a very good basketball team and compete on the highest level and I would like to be part of that legacy. I think U of M will challenge me to become a better player on the court and a better person off the court. Minnesota's great academic program was another reason why I decided to go to this university. One of the most important things for my family and for myself, are the people who I will be around the next three years, and we believe that I will have a great time being a Golden Gopher."
