June 29, 2016 The University of Minnesota today announced two additions to the Athletics Department, Deputy Athletics Director and Chief Financial Officer Rhonda McFarland and Deputy Athletics Director for Administration John Cunningham.
"I'm excited to bring these two outstanding professionals to Gopher Athletics and the great state of Minnesota," said Director of Athletics Mark Coyle. "Rhonda and John's unwavering commitment to the development and welfare of students during each of their careers has been remarkable and I know they will continue that commitment here at the University of Minnesota on behalf of the Maroon and Gold."
McFarland joins Minnesota's staff from Syracuse, where she was Deputy Athletics Director and CFO. She will work with the department's budgets and finances, as well as other areas of administration.
McFarland arrived at Syracuse after working at Boise State for nine years. She began her time with Bronco Sports as a senior business manager, later serving as associate athletics director for finance, a role in which she oversaw budget management and reporting, among other areas of the department's finances. McFarland began her career at Boise State as the University's administrative accounting manager, where she was responsible for the school's financial reporting. Prior to her time in athletics, McFarland held positions in accounting, auditing, and business operations for both corporate and non-profit organizations, as well as operating her own accounting services business.
A graduate in business administration from Arizona State, McFarland will move to Minnesota with her husband, Tom. Their adult sons, Shawn and Tyler, reside in the Boise area.
Cunningham will oversee the day-to-day administrative operations of the department, a role which will include working with all 25 Gopher programs and external units, as well as sport administrator responsibilities. He comes to Minnesota from Syracuse, where he also served as the Deputy Athletics Director for Administration.
Prior to his tenure at Syracuse, Cunningham served in a variety of roles in the athletics departments at Boise State, Texas Christian (TCU) and Maryland, contributing to successes across many of the athletic programs at all three institutions.
A 2001 TCU graduate, Cunningham received a law degree from the University of Nebraska's College of Law in 2005. He will be joined in Minnesota by his wife, Caitlin, and their sons, Gus and Hank.
McFarland's first day with Gopher Athletics will be Wednesday, June 29. Cunningham will begin in late July.
