Lehman Takes 12th in U.S. Heptathlon

EUGENE, Ore. - Two-time defending Big Ten Conference heptathlon champion Jess Lehman scored 5,806 points to place 12th in the heptathlon, and Gopher alum Gabriele Grunewald took 12th in the 1,500-meter run on the final day of the U.S. Olympic Trials Sunday.
Lehman entered day two of the heptathlon in 19th place and used strong performances in the final three events to climb seven places and take 12th overall. She began the day with a 15th-place finish in long jump with a mark of 5.85m (19-02.50) before recording a heptathlon career-best mark of 47.36m (155-04) for third place in javelin. Lehman wrapped up the meet by clocking a time of 2:16.55 in the 800-meter run for 13th place.
Meanwhile, Grunewald also took home a 12th-place finish in the 1,500m final, marking her fourth race of the trials. Grunewald ran 4:18.73 after running 4:11.86 in the semifinal round to punch her ticket to today's final. The Perham, Minn., native started off the Olympic Trials by running the 5,000-meter qualifier just hours before the first round of the 1,500m.
Up next for the Gophers in summer competition is Agnes Esser competing for Canada at the 2016 NACAC U23 Championships (July 15-17) and Shanique Wright representing Jamaica at the IAAF World U20 Championships (July 19-24).
