MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) -- The University of Minnesota and the Gopher Hockey program mourn the loss of former Gophers captain Robert "Mike" Pearson, who passed away earlier this month. He was 81.
A native of Fort Frances, Ontario, Pearson was a three-year letter winner for the Maroon & Gold from 1956-58. Pearson recorded 81 points (38 goals, 43 assists) in 78 career games, playing in an era when freshmen were ineligible.
As a senior in 1957-58, Pearson served as a team captain with Jack McCartan while Pearson finished among the team's top scorers in all three years of varsity play. His 32 points (16 goals, 16 assists) in 1955-56 were second most on the team behind Ken Yackel while he repeated a runner-up performance on the stat sheet with 30 points (13 goals, 17 assists) in 1957-58 behind Dick Burg. Pearson finished tied for third in scoring with 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) in 1956-57.
