Gophers Open Season with Win at Kansas

The Golden Gophers women's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 2-1 win against the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday evening. Simone Kolander and April Bockin lifted Minnesota's offense at Rock Chalk Park.
The Gophers placed four shots on goal over the 90-minute contest over the Jayhawks' three.
Minnesota got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute of the game when senior Kolander netted a ball off a cross to the middle of the box from fellow co-captain Josee Stiever.
"There was good momentum after that first goal," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "We were finding ways to keep the ball."
Sophomore Bockin gave the Gophers a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute off a penalty kick shot.
Seven minutes later, the Jayhawks responded with penalty kick goal of their own to bring the score to 2-1.
The Gophers defense came up strong for Minnesota, clearing 10 Kansas corner kicks in the second half.
"Kansas put us under a lot of pressure, but we didn't break," Golan said. "It was great to see that at the start of the season, that shows the strength of our chemistry."
On the evening, Gophers Kolander, Bockin, Sydney Squires and Julianna Gernes notched shots on goal, while goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs was credited the win. Freshman Nikki Albrecht, TJ McKendrick and Maya Rajacich made their collegiate debuts.
With a 1-0-0 record, the Gophers host Utah this Sunday, Aug. 21 at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium to kick off a three-game homestand. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. BOGO tickets are available at mygophersports.com.
