Gophers Fall In Four to Stanford

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell in four sets to No. 11 Stanford, today, in Palo Alto, Calif. The Gophers drop to 1-1 on the season.
Stanford outhit the Gophers, .233 to .142 and held a 17.5-12.5 blocks advantage. Hannah Tapp led the Gophers with 17 kills and hit .300 for the match, while Paige Tapp had 13 kills. The duo also had six blocks each. Sarah Wilhite and Alexis Hart each added eight kills. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a match-high 37 assists and 17 digs.
The Gophers travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they will play Texas A&M and Florida State, Sept. 2-3. Minnesota plays at 7 p.m. CT both days.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Stanford jumped out to a 5-1 and later an 8-3 lead as the Gophers called their first timeout. Minnesota erased the deficit to just one when Wilhite added a kill at 9-8. The Cardinal brought their lead back to four at 11-8 and again at 14-10. As Stanford held a 17-13 score, the Gophers called their second timeout of the set. Minnesota cut the Cardinal lead to two, 19-17, when the Gophers had a block from P Tapp and Wilhite. Trailing 23-19, Minnesota went on a run with a P Tapp kill, a Stanford attack error and a block by H Tapp and Maddie Beal to come within one. The play forced Stanford to take a timeout as the Gophers trailed, 23-22. Stanford, however, closed out the set with a 25-23 set win and took a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: The Cardinal hit .333 in the second set and went up, 2-0. Similar to the first set, Stanford jumped out to a 5-1 lead as the Gophers called a timeout. Minnesota closed it to 6-3 off a P Tapp/Lohman block, but Stanford earned a sideout to stop the run. Stanford jumped up to a 14-9 lead and later 18-10, before Hart earned a kill. The Cardinal took a 20-12 lead and 22-13 lead, both off of kills. Stanford closed out the set with back-to-back kills for the 25-15 win.
Set 3: Facing match point, the Gophers came back and won the set, 27-25. Minnesota jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third set off a kill from P Tapp. Stanford, however, came back to tie the set at 7-7 and the lead off the block. Minnesota took a 10-8 lead off a Hart kill, but Stanford would go on a 5-0 run and a 13-10 lead. It forced Minnesota to call a timeout, but after the break, Stanford added to its lead when it went up, 17-10. Minnesota went on a 3-1 run before Stanford called a timeout. The Gophers came out of the break and cut the lead to two at 18-16. Minnesota tied the set at 19-19 off a H Tapp kill, which forced Stanford to call a timeout. After a block and a 20-19 lead, Stanford ended the run with a kill. Facing match point and trailing 24-22, the Gophers battled back and tied the set at 24-24. After tying the set at 25, the Gophers closed the door and forced a fourth set off a Taylor Morgan kill as Minnesota trailed, 2-1.
Set 4: Stanford took the match with a 25-19 fourth-set win. After a 6-6 tie, the Cardinal went up, 11-8 as Minnesota called a timeout. H Tapp added a kill for a sideout at 12-9. Back-to-back kills from H Tapp pulled the Gophers within one at 13-12. Stanford took an 18-14 lead, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. The Cardinal continued to add to the lead, but Minnesota got a kill from Hart, while Stanford had an attack error for a 21-18 Stanford advantage as Stanford called a timeout. After a 22-19 Cardinal lead off a kill, Stanford finished off the set with back-to-back blocks to win the match, 3-1.
