Minnesota's Rúnar Arnorsson, Riley Johnson and Jose Mendez are among the Big Ten Golfers to Watch listed by the conference Wednesday. Click here for the full list.
Arnorsson is a junior hailing from Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. Last season, he broke a 17-year-old program record with a first-round 62 at the Barona Collegiate Cup. Arnorsson captured his first collegiate win at the Barona. He played in 10 tournaments with a 75.03 scoring average and tied for 36th at last year's Big Ten Championships.
Johnson, a native of Fargo, N.D., played in seven tournaments as a sophomore last year. He has competed at the Big Ten Championships in each of his first two seasons, including a tie for 18th as a freshman. Johnson was named the team's Louis Lick Hardest Worker Award winner last season.
Mendez is back for his senior season after being limited by injury last year. The San Jose, Costa Rica, native was a Big Ten champion in 2014 and tied for fifth in 2015. Mendez's freshman (71.97) and sophomore (71.74) scoring averages are two of the top four season numbers in program history.
The Gophers open their 2016-17 season at the Gopher Invitational Sept. 10-11. The tournament at Windsong Farm Golf Club is free to attend.
