The Gophers are ninth after 36 holes at the Gopher Invitational, with a strong individual performance from freshman Mason Fiddle. The final 18 holes of the tournament will begin 7:30 Sunday morning at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
Fiddle, playing as an individual, had Minnesota's top score in his first collegiate competition. He turned in an even-par 71 in the morning round and followed with a 74 in the afternoon to finish 3 over on the day. Fiddle enters the third round tied for 24th.
Riley Johnson, Justin Doeden and William Leaf led the Gophers' "A" team with 36-hole scores of 146 (+4). They are tied for 27th. Doeden, a senior, birdied three straight holes on the back nine and had a 70 in the second round for the team's sole under-par 18. Johnson is the Gophers' top returning finisher from last year.
San Diego State holds a two-shot lead at 3 over par with Arkansas and Oklahoma in second place. Oklahoma won last year's tournament.
Michigan State's Sam Weatherhead leads individually at 3 under. Alvaro Ortiz and Dylan Naidoo of Arkansas and Iowa's Raymond Knoll are one stroke behind Weatherhead.
In the inaugural Gopher Individual at Pioneer Creek Golf Course, Kent State's Bjarki Petursson and San Diego State's Brian Song are tied for the lead. They were 4 under on the day at the par-72 course.
