Gophers defeat No. 17 Ohio State in Four

The No. 2 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated No. 17 Ohio State on Saturday night 25-16, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, to improve to 10-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Big Ten.

As a team, the Golden Gophers hit .230 to Ohio State's .162, and out-blocked the Buckeyes 8.5 to 5. Minnesota also held a 62-59 dig advantage.
Sarah Wilhiteled the team with 15 kills as she hit .316, Alexis Hartfollowed with nine, with Molly Lohmanestablishing seven kills and hit. 500. Dalianliz Rosado, Wilhite and Samantha Seliger-Swensonall had 11 digs, with Sophie Beckleyand Katie Schauearning eight. Seliger-Swenson also had 35 assists and two kills.



Minnesota will travel to Indiana next Friday to take on the Hoosiers at 6 p.m. CT.

Set Breakdown:

Set 1: The Gophers opened the match with a 25-16 win. Minnesota jumped out to a 7-1 lead as the Buckeyes called its first timeout of the match. H Tapp, however, came out of the timeout with a kill to put Minnesota up, 8-1. A P Tapp kill later put the Gophers up 13-6, while a Wilhite kill put Minnesota up, 17-9. OSU came back and cut the Gophers lead to 18-12. Back-to-back kills from Hannah and P Tapp gave Minnesota a 20-13 lead. The Buckeyes closed out the set with three errors, one service and two attack errors, to go up, 1-0.

Set 2: Minnesota erased a 4-1 Buckeye start to come back and win the set, 25-18. Trailing 4-1, the Gophers came back and tied the set at 6-6 and again at 7-7 before going on a 5-0 run and up 12-8. Ohio State called a timeout and cut the Gopher lead to two before Wilhite added a kill for a 13-10 lead. Off of Wilhite's serve rotation, Minnesota went on a 6-0 run lead as the Gophers went up 18-10. During that span, Minnesota had five kills as OSU attempted to break the string with its second timeout. The Buckeyes earned a sideout at 19-12 Gopher advantage and later went up 23-17 on a Hart kill, while the Gophers finished off the set with two Wilhite kills to go up, 2-0.

Set 3: The Buckeyes hit .359 to Minnesota's .200 to earn a 25-18 third set win. OSU came out of the break and took an 8-3 lead, which forced Minnesota to call its first timeout of the match. A Wilhite kill put the Gopher down four at 12-8. Trailing 14-9, Minnesota strung together three-straight on a Seliger-Swenson kill, an ace by Rosado and a block from P Tapp/Lohman/Hart. The Buckeyes, however, took a 17-12 lead and forced Minnesota to call a second timeout. The Gophers battled back and cut the OSU lead to four at 19-15 as the Buckeyes called a timeout. Minnesota cut the lead to 21-17 off an OSU attack error, but OSU finished off the set with a kill and a Gopher attack error to cut Minnesota's match lead to 2-1.

Set 4: Trailing 19-18, the Gophers finished off the set and the match with a 25-22 set win. Minnesota opened the fourth set with a 5-2 lead off a Seliger-Swenson kill. After back-to-back attack errors from OSU and an 8-3 lead, the Buckeyes took their first timeout. OSU, however, climbed back into the set and cut the Gopher lead to 10-9 on back-to-back aces as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers took an 18-15 lead before OSU came back and tied the set at 18 as the Gophers called a timeout. After an OSU ace to go up 19-18, Minnesota went on a 5-0 run to go up 23-19. OSU added back-to-back points to cut the lead to two, but the Gophers would take the match after three kills from Wilhite.
