Gophers Earn Four-Set Win over Florida State

The No. 6 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-1 win (25-14, 26-24, 21-25, 25-12) over No. 16 Florida State, tonight, to conclude the Puerto Rico Clasico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. With the win, Minnesota improves to 3-1 on the season and went 2-0 against ranked opponents this weekend. The Gophers defeated No. 14 Texas A&M in three last night.
Hannah Tapp hit .615, tied a team-high 18 kills and had a team-best six blocks. It was a season high for Tapp in kills and hitting efficiency. Sarah Wilhite had 18 kills, while Alexis Hart added a career-best 15 and hit .333. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a match-high 54 assists. Dalianliz Rosado tied a match-high 16 digs. As a team, the Gophers hit .320 to Florida State's .206. Minnesota also held a 55-42 dig advantage and outblocked FSU, 10-4.
Minnesota will be on the road for the third-straight week when it faces another two ranked opponents in No. 21 Louisville and No. 12 North Carolina in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Sept. 9-10. Wisconsin will also be competing in the tournament as the other Big Ten representative.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota utilized a 13-point run to take the first set, 25-14. Minnesota hit .400 in the opening set and had 17 kills. Trailing 7-4, Minnesota came back and tied the set on Seliger-Swenson kill at 7-6, followed by Hart kill to tie up the set. Trailing 10-9, Minnesota went on its big run in the middle of the set. Minnesota took a 13-10 lead after H Tapp earned her first kill of the evening and followed with a block. The run forced FSU to call a timeout, but the Gophers added the pressure when it added to their lead and went up 20-10 on a Wilhite block. At one point, Minnesota's lead was 22-10 before FSU earned a sideout. The Gophers finished off the set with a Wilhite kill, her fifth of the set.
Set 2: The Gophers went up 2-0 after a 26-24 second set win. Florida State took an 11-8 lead early in the second set, but the Gophers erased the deficit off a H Tapp kill, a Wilhite ace and a FSU attack error to tie it up at 11-11 and later took a 12-11 lead off a block by H Tapp and Lohman. As H Tapp added another kill to put Minnesota up, 14-11, FSU called its first timeout of the set. Minnesota capped off an eight-point run with a kill from Hart off a bump set from Seliger-Swenson and a 15-11 lead. However, FSU came all the way back and tied the set at 16-16. The Gophers responded with a three-point run as Paige Tapp added a kill. The run caused FSU to burn its second timeout of the set. FSU cut Minnesota's lead to one three times after the timeout before it tied the set at 24-24. The Gophers put away the set with kills from Wilhite and Hart to take a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: FSU hit .316 in the third set to win it, 25-21. Minnesota opened the third set with a 7-5 lead as Hart had a kill off the FSU block attempt. Lohman added an overpass kill for an 11-7 lead and a 13-9 with a kill from the middle. P Tapp added a kill for a 16-12 lead, but FSU responded and cut Minnesota's lead to one at 16-15 as the Gophers called a timeout. FSU took a two-point lead at 19-17, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. FSU, however, earned back-to-back aces and a kill for a 22-17 lead. The Gophers cut the lead to 23-20 as FSU called a timeout. However, FSU finished off the set with a kill to cut the match lead to 2-1.
Set 4: The Gophers rebounded after the third set and hit .455 in the fourth to win the set, 25-12. Minnesota had 18 kills in the four set and committed just three errors to FSU's nine kills, four errors. Minnesota opened the fourth set with a 10-6 lead, which forced FSU to call an early timeout. Back-to-back Hart kills put the Gophers up, 13-8. P Tapp made a great read for a block to put the Gophers up, 16-9, and forced FSU to burn its second timeout of the set. P Tapp, however, added another block out of the break. A FSU attack error but the Gophers up 20-10. Minnesota finished off the match with a kill by H Tapp at 23-12, a Mollly Lohman kill and a Hart kill to end the match.
