Gophers Fall to Duke on the Road

The No. 9 University of Minnesota women's soccer team fell to No. 7 Duke in a 1-0 battle on Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. The Gophers are now 5-1-0 on the 2016 season.
"I couldn't be more proud of the way this team played this weekend." head coach Stefanie Golan said. "Friday we came out with a 5-0 victory, and today we went toe-to-toe with the best Duke team I've seen."
Minnesota tallied 12 shots over the Blue Devils' nine. Senior midfielder Josee Stiever led the team with four shots with one on goal. Simone Kolander had three shots, while sophomore Molly Fiedler recorded a shot on goal.
Duke found the back of the net in the 31st minute of the match with a cross from the left side that was volleyed to the low left. It was the first goal the Gophers allowed in 435 minutes.
At the half, Minnesota was down 1-0.
The Gophers went on to lead offensive ball time, but were unable to score.
"We were evenly matched," Golan said. "It was disappointing to not get more out of the game, but we will grow from this."
Gophers Simone Kolander and April Bockin were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances.
This season, Minnesota has outscored their opponents 16-2.
Next weekend, the Gophers will travel to the opposite coast to wrap up the non-conference slate. Minnesota is scheduled to face No. 2 Stanford on Friday, Sept. 9 and No. 22 Santa Clara on Sunday, Sept. 11.
