Only four days removed from wrapping up a grueling run through the 2017 Southern Scuffle, Minnesota hit the mat at the Sports Pavilion for the first time in six weeks to host Big Ten rival Penn State. The dual was the Gophers' conference home opener.

Minnesota took two matches from Penn State starting with second-ranked Brett Pfarr at 197 pounds. Pfarr added another ranked win to his resume with a 3-2 decision over No. 11 Matt McCutcheon. He nows has six ranked wins this season and a record of 21-5 against ranked opponents since bumping up to 197 pounds last year. Those five losses, all to opponents ranked No. 4 or better, are the only five losses for Pfarr at 197. Overall, he is 57-5 since bumping up.

No. 16 Mitch McKee provided the other Gopher victory, a hard-fought 2-1 decision over George Carpenter. McKee picked up the match's only takedown in the first period, bringing Carpenter to the mat and riding him out.

The Gophers return to action this Sunday, when they host border rival Wisconsin.
