Gophers Finish Fourth at Windy City Invite

The University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team took fourth with a score of 397.600 at the
47th annual Windy City Invitational on Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion. The Gophers finished behind Illinois (412.150), Ohio State (403.450) and Michigan (398.100), while topping Iowa (387.550) and UIC (360.250).
"This team is better than what they showed tonight," head coach Mike Burns said. "Pommel horse and floor need to be a lot stronger, but this team has fire in their belly for much more."
As a team, Minnesota recorded a 71.600 on vault, 67.000 on parallel bars, 66.750 on high bar, 68.350 on floor, 58.150 on pommel horse and 65.750 on rings.
Yaroslav Pochinka a scored a 14.650 to tie for second place. Justin Karstadt tallied a 14.600 for fourth, while Vitali Kan's 14.300 placed sixth to round out the top-three finishers for Minnesota.
On parallel bars, Ryan Bergman tied for third with a 14.000. Karstadt was again the Gophers' second-best finisher with a 13.800 for sixth place. Sophomore Ben Winkel broke into the lineup for the first time and tallied a 13.700 in a tie for seventh.
Tristan Duran finished fifth on high bar with a 14.050 to lead the team. Jalon Stephens posted a 13.750 for eighth, and Michael Harris tied for 13th with a 13.350.
Alex Wittenberg posted a 14.100 on floor to place ninth. Senior Zach Liebler tallied a 13.750 for 14th, and Joel Gagnon followed with a 13.700 for 15th place.
On pommel horse, Kan led Minnesota with a 12.800 for tenth place. To round out the top-three for the Gophers, Karstadt and Duran scored 12.200 and 11.900, respectively.
The Gophers finished the meet on rings, as Pochinka posted a 13.700 for sixth place and Karstadt followed for seventh with a 13.700. Shashank Yallamraju was Minnesota's next best scorer with a 13.100 for 14th.
In the all-around competition, Karstadt placed fourth with a 79.150 and Stephens picked up sixth with a 77.300.
Minnesota welcome Air Force to the Sports Pavilion on Saturday, Jan. 21. The first rotation is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at mygophersports.com.
NOTE: The Gophers originally placed third in the meet, but a meet scoring error on Michigan's high bar moved the Wolverines up during an inquiry on Sunday.
