Gophers in the Pros: Jan. 19

MINNEAPOLIS ââ'¬" As the Golden Gopher women's hockey team returns home to host Ohio State at Ridder Arena this weekend, catch up on the recent action for the Gophers alumni competing in the NWHL and CWHL this season.

In addition to recent game action, four Gopher alums have been chosen to play in their respective leagues' all-star games next month. Kelly Terry of the Toronto Furies was selected for the 2017 CWHL All-Star Game, which will be held at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Saturday, Feb. 11. Meanwhile, Megan Bozek, Amanda Kessel, and Gigi Marvin are set to skate in the 2017 NWHL All-Star Game. The NWHL All-Star Weekend is set for Saturday, Feb. 11 and Sunday, Feb. 12.

In total, seven University of Minnesota alumni are playing in the NWHL and CWHL this season: Megan Bozek, Jordyn Burns, Amanda Kessel; Amanda Leveille, Gigi Marvin, Milica McMillen, and Anne Schleper are competing in the NWHL while Sarah Davis and Kelly Terry are continuing their CWHL careers. The nine Golden Gophers are among 36 WCHA alumni playing in either the NWHL or CWHL this season.

CWHL Update

Dec. 17 - Calgary Inferno at Toronto Furies

Sarah Davis and the Calgary Inferno topped Kelly Terry and the Toronto Furies on the road by a score of 5-1. After a scoreless first period, Calgary struck in the middle frame to gain the 1-0 lead over Toronto. During the third period, Davis registered a goal and an assist to help secure her team's 5-1 win.

Dec. 18 - Calgary Inferno at Toronto Furies

Sarah Davis and the Calgary Inferno swept the weekend series against the Toronto Furies with a 3-1 win. Bailey Bram scored the first goal of the game for the Inferno in the opening period with Davis assisting on the goal. Davis opened the second period by scoring the game-winning goal, just 30 seconds after the puck dropped. Toronto responded with a goal five minutes later, but Calgary ultimately captured the 3-1 victory with a late third-period goal.

Jan. 14 - Calgary Inferno at Les Canadiennes Montreal

Sarah Davis and the Inferno continued their winning streak with a 5-4 overtime victory over Les Canadiennes Montreal. Calgary scored the first goal of the game, but Montreal responded with three goals in the opening period. During the second period, Calgary scored two goals and Montreal scored one. At the beginning of the third period, Montreal held a 4-3 lead, before Calgary responded to tie the game. During overtime, Brianne Jenner scored the game-winner for Calgary.

Jan. 15 - Calgary Inferno at Les Canadiennes Montreal

Les Canadiennes Montreal hosted the Calgary Inferno during the second game of the series in which they won 4-1. Montreal opened the scoring, before Calgary responded to tie the game at one early in the first period. Sarah Davis assisted the Calgary goal. Montreal scored late in the first period to take the 2-1 lead heading into the middle frame. After a scoreless second period, Montreal found the back of the net two more times during the third period to secure a 4-1 win.

NWHL Update

Dec. 11 - Connecticut Whale at New York Riveters

Milica McMillen and the New York Riveters hosted the Connecticut Whale in a 4-2 loss on Dec. 11. The Whale scored the first goal of the game in the first period, before the Riveters responded with two goals during the middle frame. The Whale tied the game before the second period concluded, then scored two more goals in the final period to win 4-2. During the game, McMillen registered one shot on goal.

Dec. 18 - New York Riveters at Connecticut Whale

After losing in a 4-2 game on Dec. 11, Milica McMillen and the New York Riveters responded by shutting out the Connecticut Whale on the road by a score of 2-0. The Riveters struck early in the first period to gain the 1-0 lead. The game would remain scoreless until the Riveters scored late in the final period to secure a 2-0 win.

Jan. 7 - Buffalo Beauts at Connecticut Whale

The Buffalo Beauts and Connecticut Whale resumed the season when the Beauts topped the Whale 6-5. Amanda Leveille started in net for the Beauts, while Jordyn Burns skated at forward for the team. Buffalo scored the first three goals of the game, before the Whale erupted for three goals in the second period. The third period consisted of three more goals from the Beauts, and two from the Whale. During the game, Burns had an assist on the second goal, while Leveille made 60 saves and posted a .923 save percentage.

Jan. 14 - New York Riveters at Buffalo Beauts

The New York Riveters continued a win streak when they shut out the Buffalo Beauts on the road by a score of 3-0. New York opened the game with two goals in the first period before tallying one in the middle frame to earn a 3-0 win. Milica McMillen registered one shot on goal during the contest.

Jan. 15 - Boston Pride at Connecticut Whale

Gigi Marvin and the Boston Pride continued their undefeated streak when they beat the Connecticut Whale 4-0 on the road. The Pride struck midway through the opening period to score the first goal of the game. In the second period, Alex Carpenter scored a shorthanded goal for the Pride, giving them the 2-0 lead. The Pride concluded the game with two, third period goals to earn the 4-0 victory. Marvin had one shot on goal during her team's win.
