Gophers In The Super Bowl
Former University of Minnesota standouts Ra'Shede Hageman and De'Vondre Campbell are headed to the Super Bowl, after helping the Atlanta Falcons defeat the Green Bay Packers, 44-21, in the NFC Championship Game.
Hageman, who is from Minneapolis, was at Minnesota from 2009-13. He was recruited by the Gophers as a tight end, but quickly converted to defensive tackle. Hageman played in 46 career games and registered 91 tackles (57 solo) and 24 tackles-for-loss. He also posted 10 sacks and broke up 11 passes.
In 2013, his senior season, Hageman was name first-team All-Big Ten and third-team Associated Press All-American. He made 38 tackles (26 solo) as a senior and also notched 13 tackles-for-loss. He recorded two sacks, broke up eight passes, recorded one interception, recovered one fumble and blocked both a field goal and extra point in his final season wearing Maroon and Gold.
Campbell played from 2013-15 at Minnesota after transferring from Hutchinson Community College at the end of the 2012 season. He started 27 career games for the Gophers and played in 39. He finished his Minnesota career with 208 tackles, which included 129 solo stops. Campbell also tallied 16 career tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks, while recovering three fumbles and forcing two fumbles. He also notched two career interceptions, one of which he returned 30 yards for a touchdown at Michigan in 2014.
As a senior, in 2015, he led the team with 4.0 sacks and finished third in tackles (92) and solo tackles (53). He also tallied 6.5 tackles-for-loss, broke up three passes, made one interception and forced one fumble. Campbell was named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention as a senior by both conference coaches and media.
Atlanta will play either New England or Pittsburgh in Super Bowl LI on Feb. 5 at NRG Stadium in Houston Texas. Hageman and Campbell will be the first Gophers to play in the Super Bowl, since Eric Decker and Denver Broncos competed in Super Bowl XLVIII. The last Gopher to win a Super Bowl was Matt Spaeth, who was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers when they won Super Bowl XLIII.
