The North Star College Cup presented by TRIA Ortopaedic Center returns this weekend at Xcel Energy Center with four of the top teams in college hockey competing for in-state bragging rights and NCAA tournament implications.
For the third year in a row, three nationally ranked teams (No. 1/2 Minnesota Duluth, No. 6 Minnesota and No. 20 Bemidji State) are set for action while the fourth (St. Cloud State) is just outside the national rankings after winning the North Star College Cup last season.
In fact, the previous three tournament champions will participate in the fourth and final North Star College Cup with the Gophers winning the inaugural event in 2014, the Beavers claiming the title in 2015 and the Huskies returning as defending tournament champions.
Both of this year's semifinal matchups will serve as rematches of previous North Star College Cup championship contests. Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth met in the inaugural event's championship bout with the Gophers winning a thrilling shootout for the tournament cup while St. Cloud State bested Bemidji State for the North Star College Cup last season.
