This afternoon's 85-78 loss was the seventh all-time meeting between Minnesota and Maryland, with the Terps now holding a 6-1 lead (Maryland leads 4-1 in Minneapolis). Head coach Richard Pitino is 1-2 against Maryland, and 21-47 against Big Ten foes, while Minnesota now stands at 738-809 all-time in B1G play. Coach Pitino's fourth-year record at Minnesota now stands at 66-58, and his five-year career mark is 84-72.
STARTING FIVE
For the third time this season, Coach Pitino utilized a starting lineup of redshirt senior Akeem Springs, juniors Nate Mason and Reggie Lynch, sophomore Jordan Murphy, and true freshman Amir Coffey. Mason made his team-leading 57th career start in Maroon and Gold, while Murphy was in the starting lineup for the 42nd time. Those two players have started every game this season. Lynch, a redshirt junior who transferred from Illinois State, has started 21 games for the Gophers, while Coffey also made his 21st career start. Springs made his fourth start with the Gophers.
SPRINGS HAS SEASON HIGH
Akeem Springs made his fourth start of the season this afternoon, and he was one of five Gophers to reach double-figures as he finished with a season-high 23 points. Springs made 9-of-15 field goals, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. The point total for Springs was his 12th double-figure effort of the season. Since moving to the starting lineup three games ago, Springs has averaged 18.0 points and 5.6 rebounds, while making nine three-pointers.
MASON JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB
Nate Mason hit a three-pointer late in the second half of this afternoon's game, which moved him past 1,000 career points. In 82 career games, Mason currently stands at 1,004 points (12.2 ppg), making him Minnesota's 41st all-time player to reach the milestone. Mason finished Saturday's game with 14 points. It was his 19th double-figure scoring effort this season, and the 56th of his career.
LYNCH HAS DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Reggie Lynch recorded his second point-rebound double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots before fouling out late in the game. The double-digit rebounding total was the third this season for Lynch. His previous double-double took place with 18 points and 11 boards in the win against Northern Illinois on Dec. 11. Lynch, who leads the Big Ten with 66 blocked shots, has had three or more blocks 12 times this season.
MISCELLANEOUS ODDS AND ENDS
Among odds and ends in today's game, Akeem Springs played his 100th collegiate game between Northern Illinois (18 games), Milwaukee (60) and Minnesota (22) … Dupree McBrayer scored his 400th career point … Amir Coffey dished out a career-best nine assists and reached double-figures (11 points) for the third-straight game … Eric Curry grabbed 10 rebounds, his second double-figure rebounding game this season, and his first in Big Ten play … Minnesota held its 17th halftime lead, and the Gophers are 12-5 in those games … the Gophers fell to 7-1 this season when wearing their White uniforms … the attendance of 11,191 was Minnesota's fourth-largest home crowd this season.
