Two Gopher alums, Jayson Ness and Tony Nelson, took on some of the world's best in Paris on Sunday, wrestling freestyle at the 2017 Paris International.

Ness reached the finals at 61 kilograms by knocking off fellow American Tony Ramos, 7-4, in his opening match before cranking up the offense in a 12-4 win over Frenchman Iurii Siemakin. In the championship final, Ness fell to Georgian Shota Phartenadze, 9-2.

Ness' silver medal was one of 11 freestyle medals won by Americans in the event. U.S. wrestlers won at least one medal at every weight.

Tony Nelson also wrestled in Paris. In a tough opening-round match, Nelson found himself once against taking on American Zac Rey. Nelson fell, 4-2. Rey went on to claim a bronze medal.
