MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's cross country program returns to action this weekend with a pair of meets in Wisconsin -- opening with the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison on Friday, Oct. 13 and concluding with the Jim Drews Invitational in Ettrick on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Rewind: Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational
The Maroon & Gold finished 22nd at last year's Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational with four of the team's scorers returning to the field including the program's top three runners. Obsa Ali led the way with a 48th-place finish (24:35.5) in the eight-kilometer race followed by Charlie Lawrence in 79th (24:52.5) and Connor Olson in 103rd (25:02.9). Derek Wiebke also scored for the Gophers in 161st (25:39.1).

Last Time Out: Roy Griak Invitational
The Gophers finished fourth overall at the 32nd annual Roy Griak Invitational last month with three Minnesota runners posting top-25 finishes. Charlie Lawrence led the way for the Maroon & Gold with a 13th-place finish (25:37.9) for the eight-kilometer course followed by Obsa Ali in 21st (25:52.5) and Derek Wiebke in 25th (25:58.1).

Lawrence, Wiebke Captain the Gophers
Redshirt senior Charlie Lawrenceis back for his second year as captain of the Maroon & Gold while senior Derek Wiebkejoins him as a team captain this year. A native of Foley, Minn., Lawrence earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors last year as well as his second-straight NCAA All-Region selection. A Academic All-American from Kasson, Minn., Wiebke returns to the cross country program after winning a Big Ten indoor mile title last year along with Second Team All-America honors as part of the indoor distance medley relay team.

The Maroon & Gold follow up this weekend's action with the 2017 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday, Oct. 29 in Bloomington, Ind. The men's eight-kilometer race will be held at the IU Championship Cross Country Course, where the Gophers finished second earlier this year at the IU Open.
