Ali Leads Gophers in Madison

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Minnesota men's cross country program returned to action with a 12th-place finish at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course. Minnesota totaled 413 points on the day.
Obsa Ali led the way for Minnesota with a 29th-place finish and a time of 24:07.9 followed by Evan Ferlic in 79th at 24:34.5. Hamza Ali came across the eight-kilometer course in 24:38.6 to finish 89th while Derek Wiebke and Alec Basten closed out the Minnesota scoring contingency in 105th and 111th, respectively. Wiebke clocked a 24:48.6 while Basten came through in 24:51.8.
Connor Olson and Charlie Lawrence were also in action for the Gophers with Olson finishing 140th (24:59.7) and Lawrence finishing 150th (25:04.6).
Northern Arizona won the team title with 50 points while Syracuse's Justyn Knight led the individual standings at 23:38.9.
Meanwhile, a second contingency of Gophers finished eighth in the men's open competition, led by Nick Rink in 11th place (25:07.2). Owen Hoeft clocked a 25:44.7 to finish 35th while Joey Duerr came in 37th at 25:47.6. Jack Manderscheid (46th, 26:36.1) and Shane Streich (50th, 26:51.8) closed out Minnesota's scoring as the Gopehrs totaled 179 points. Stanford won the open competition with 60 points.
