Final Stats

The University of Minnesota soccer team fell to Ohio State 2-1 on Senior Night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in front of 1160 fans, the second most fans at any game this season.

Julianna Gernes scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute to cut the Buckeyes 2-0 lead, but the Gophers couldn't put together an equalizing goal in the remaining minutes. The goal is her eighth goal of the season, the second most on the team and tied for fourth most in the Big Ten.

"We are certainly disappointed, but we are really happy with the way we responded in the second half," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "We were throwing everything we could at them, we changed offensive formations up numerous times and we had a couple looks that just didn't find their way in."

Ohio State scored both of their goals within the first 15 minutes; one came off a long range shot and the other off a pass on a corner kick.

The Gophers had numerous opportunities early on in the game. April Bockin was able to beat the goalkeeper in the box just minutes into the game, but an Ohio State defender stepped in front of her kick toward the goal, keeping the Gophers off the board early.

Emilly Heslin had an opportunity with under two minutes remaining. Her free kick from just beyond the 18 sailed high, keeping the Buckeyes on top.

Kailee Sharp made a career-high five saves in the game, putting her season total up to 27. Bockin put four shots up for Minnesota, which led the team.

Minnesota was able to hold an advantage in overall shots in the game with 18 to Ohio State's nine, but only had three on goal.

The Gophers will now shift their focus to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. They will travel to Lincoln, Neb. for an Oct. 25 meeting. With a win, the Gophers will clinch a home game for the Big Ten tournament quarterfinal. The Gophers have already clinched their spot in the Big Ten tournament that is scheduled to begin Oct. 29.
