MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 18 University of Minnesota men's cross country program returns to action this Sunday, Oct. 29 at the 2017 Big Ten Cross Country Championships, held at the IU Championship Cross Country Course in Bloomington, Ind.
The men's eight-kilometer competition is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. CT with the women's six-kilometer race following at 10:45 a.m. CT.
Gophers Jump into National Rankings
After an impressive performance earlier this month in Madison, the Maroon & Gold vaulted into the national polls at No. 18 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country National Coaches' Poll. The ranking marks the program's first appearance in the national poll since coming in at No. 16 on Nov. 16, 2015. The Gophers closed out the 2015 season at No. 19 in the final rankings on Nov. 21, 2015 although those rankings reflect results at the national championships.
'U' Breaks Ground on Track & Field Facility
The University of Minnesota officially broke ground on a new outdoor track & field venue on Friday, Oct. 20. The new stadium will feature a nine-lane track with three chutes, full field event hosting capabilities, and a design to allow sprints and certain field events to be held in multiple directions to take advantage of wind conditions on competition days. These features, along with permanent and event-based seating, provide the flexibility and the amenities to host a wide variety of meets.

The 2017 Big Ten Cross Country Championships will air on tape delay via the Big Ten Network on Monday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. CT. The broadcast will also be available on BTN2Go at that time.
Last Time Out: Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational
The Gophers finished 12th earlier this month at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, topping eight nationally ranked teams in the competition. Obsa Ali led the way for the Maroon & Gold with a 29th-place finish.

Lawrence, Wiebke Captain the Gophers
Redshirt senior Charlie Lawrenceis back for his second year as captain of the Maroon & Gold while senior Derek Wiebkejoins him as a team captain this year. A native of Foley, Minn., Lawrence earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors last year as well as his second-straight NCAA All-Region selection. A Academic All-American from Kasson, Minn., Wiebke returns to the cross country program after winning a Big Ten indoor mile title last year along with Second Team All-America honors as part of the indoor distance medley relay team.
